Top British tennis star has her car stolen on her BIRTHDAY as she says ‘things can always get worse’
BRITISH tennis star Heather Watson has revealed her car was STOLEN while she was belatedly celebrating her 31st birthday.
The Guernsey-born ace was a victim of crime while she was out for dinner with friends on Friday night.
Her group included the highly-acclaimed singer and producer Empara Mi, who posted a photo on Instagram of “The Birthday Princess”.
Yet when Watson returned home, the British No.6 was shocked to discover her vehicle had been taken by thieves from its spot in an underground car park.
Ironically it happened just two days after the Lawn Tennis Association – the sport’s governing body in the UK – announced a major new partnership with car firm Lexus.
Writing on social media, Watson tweeted: “Those days where you think things can’t get any worse…trust me they can always get worse.
“It all started when my car was stolen from my home – in a secure underground parking garage with CCTV and a 24-hour security man.
“Whist I was finally getting to celebrate my birthday at dinner with my friends. Happy birthday to me?”
Watson – who turned 31 on May 19 – joked with her 166,000 followers on Twitter that she might target a used car next.
The world No.180 laughed: “An old banger is exactly what I was thinking next! Any ideas for my next car?”
Watson, who has won more than £4.1million in career prize money, reached the fourth round of Wimbledon 2022 – her greatest run at one of the four Slams.
Her progress was stopped by the German Jule Niemeier, who was a 6-2 6-4 winner.
Since then she has lost in the qualifying rounds of the US Open, Australian Open and French Open.
It is likely Watson will receive a wildcard to play Wimbledon, which starts on Monday July 3.
Meanwhile, Jamie Murray pulled out of the French Open mixed doubles second round after falling ill with really bad food poisoning.
The 37-year-old was due to play with American Taylor Townsend against Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and Yank Nathaniel Lammons but was unable to make it on site at Roland Garros.
