The India Meteorological Department has stated that while Delhi will experience a gradual increase in maximum temperatures, a heatwave in the next four to five days is unlikely. Rainfall, thanks to more than usual western disturbances, has kept temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius this month; the Safdarjung Observatory has not recorded a heatwave in Delhi, which is the first time since 2014. However, with the monsoon onset over Kerala delayed, the country’s temperatures are likely to remain above normal for a more extended period than usual. The IMD had last month predicted normal to below normal monsoon in northwest India.
