BBC Breakfast’s Jon Kay and Sally Nugent left Carol Kirkwood wincing after they interrupted her weather report in chaotic scenes.

The journalists were back on the BBC Breakfast sofa once again on Wednesday morning, while Carol joined them for her weather reports via video link.

At one point during their interactions with Carol, 60, Jon and Sally started playing the recorder.

Sally, 51, started before Jon, 53, joined in but the high whistling noise of the instrument had Carol covering her ears and wincing.

As they reached their crescendo, Carol laughed slightly awkwardly, before Sally burst out laughing too.

Jon then said: “You know those West Ham fans who were singing earlier? I think we just beat them.”

Sally then told viewers what song they had been playing if they couldn’t recognise it, saying: “That was London’s Burning, Carol was it any good? Be kind.”

Carol replied: “Actually do you know what? I thought it was going to be rubbish but you really surprised me! It was brilliant!”

Jon and Sally laughed and she told Carol: “Oh stop it! It was terrible!”

The pair had gave the instrument a go after Chetham’s School of Music said 80 per cent fewer students were learning to play the recorder compared with a decade ago.

BBC Breakfast were quick to comment on the statistic on Twitter, with one writing: “Learned to play both the descant and the treble and, of course, learned how to read music. Loved it! I’m not sure my parents were too fond, though!”

Another tweeted: “Recorder was my first instrument and my first
@ABRSM exams! Loved playing recorders! (Can still play but have little opportunity) Undervalued instruments.”

A third added: “My son in law took this up again recently. He plays beautifully and helps him with his ME.”
