Aristophanes brings the clouds to Nicosia
Antilogos Theatre continues its productions of the famous ancient Greek comedy The Clouds, commonly known in Greek as Nefeles. Just a handful of performances remain, taking place at the Open Amphitheatre University of Cyprus Central. Entirely in Greek, the Antilogos Theatre production features an eight-member cast who bring to life this popular Aristophanes play.
“The Clouds,” comment organisers, “is a comedy by ancient Greek playwright Aristophanes, originally produced at the Athens City Dionysia of 423 BCE. It is perhaps the world’s first extant ‘comedy of ideas’ and parodies intellectual fashions in classical Athens. In the play, Strepsiades, an elderly Athenian mired in debt, enrols his son Pheidippides in Socrates’ philosophy school so that he might learn the rhetorical skills necessary to defeat their creditors in court, although all he really learns is cynical disrespect for social mores and contempt for authority, which leads to Strepsiades burning the school down in disgust.”
Performances will continue until Friday 16 with shows on June 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16.
