British woman shot and husband killed after ‘robbers’ stormed their home
A British woman has been injured and her reportedly German husband killed after gunmen stormed their Mexican ranch and shot them.
The couple were gunned down on Friday morning at a jungle ranch by Lázaro Cárdenas, a coastal municipality in the southeast Quintana Roo state.
The armed men broke into the La Esperanza Ranch when they happened on the couple, in what local media reported is believed to be an attempted robbery.
Local media reports have claimed the number of assailants was between two and six.
They were shot after fighting back against the suspected robbers, per local news outlet La Palabra Del Caribe.
Neither has been officially named but local media has described them as Martin S and Sofie W, 32, regional newspaper Riviera Maya News reported.
Sofie, believed to work as a personal trainer, was airlifted to the Playa del Carmen General Hospital and remains in critical condition as of Saturday.
Police scoured the local until 1pm on Friday but did not find the shooters.
No arrests have been made.
State attorney general Óscar Montes de Oca Rosales said his office is investigating the incident.
‘The (Attorney General) of Quintana Roo informs that it initiated an investigation to clarify an event that occurred early Friday in which two people of foreign nationality were attacked with a firearm in a jungle area of the municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas,’ said Oca Rosales said.
Sofie relocated to the ranch, in the south of Lázaro Cárdenas, a few months ago, it is understood.
Her partner, Martin, is said to be a ‘transformation coach’ from Poland and education in German.
