Fashion expert Gina Rogers declared: “The itsy bitsy bikinis are in the bin this summer. Big is better.

“Some people call them granny bikinis, but Big-­Knickered Bikinis (BKBs) are flattering these days.”

Fashion writer Charlie Gowans-Eglinton said: “I think the BKB is sexy, a bit femme fatale, whatever your body size.

“Teenie bikinis are just vehicles for performative thinness, a reminder that for some reason it’s still a badge of honour to have a flat stomach on the beach, which is incredibly boring.”

She added the BKB made sunseekers feel “more comfy”.

It could spell the end of the Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini — the subject of a hit song by Bryan Hyland in 1960 and a No1 for kids’ TV star Timmy Mallett in 1990.
