Heat Waves Kill Nearly 100 People in India
Since last week, more than 100 people have died in eastern India due to higher-than-average temperatures.
According to reports in the Indian Express, the district medical officer in Uttar Pradesh said that 54 residents of Ballia died in the previous three days while temperatures ranged between 43 and 44C (109 and 111F). The report also said that in the neighbouring state of Bihar, 42 persons died.
There is no “solid evidence,” according to state officials in Uttar Pradesh, that the deaths there were caused by the heat wave, and a commission has been formed to look into this. According to the Express, the medical officer has been fired.
The effects of climate change, including more severe heat waves, are increasingly potent in India.
Meanwhile, frequent floods and cyclones threaten the country’s food and energy supply, worsening the adverse effects on public health.
According to the India Meteorological Department, hot weather is expected to persist until the start of the week along the east coast and in some regions of central India. On Sunday, Sambalpur, in Odisha, recorded the highest temperature in the country at 46C.
