Pakistan Announces ‘Public Mourning’ as 300 Refugees Die in Greece Boat Tragedy
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced public mourning on Monday due to the death of more than 300 Pakistani nationals in a shipwreck that took place off the coast of Greece last week.
In a statement released on Sunday by the office of Pakistan’s Prime Minister, today (June 19) is public mourning in this country due to the drowning of 298 Pakistani refugees on the shores of Greece.
The Pakistan premier stressed that those people involved in human trafficking will be dealt with accordingly, adding decisive actions should be taken to fight against people who are complicit in the heinous crime of human trafficking.
Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz, a leading Pakistani politician also sympathized with the victims of the late Greece boat tragedy and called on relevant authorities to seriously punish those involved in human trafficking.
A ship carrying more than 700 refugees from several countries on Wednesday, June 14, sunk near Peloponnese Region in Greece resulting in the death of hundreds of people, and the fate of many others are still missing.
Some 750 passengers including men, women and children from Syria, Egypt, Palestinian territories and Pakistan were on board, destined to reach their relatives in Europe. The Greek Coastal Guard has defended its response to the disaster that left more than 500 migrants drowning.
