Pete Alonso Will Participate In Home Run Derby, All-Star Game
Major League Baseball announced their All-Star pitchers and reserves this evening, with Pete Alonso earning the nod to represent the Mets in the National League. This is the third nomination of his five-year career, additionally being voted to the Midsummer Classic in 2019 and 2022.
No Mets pitchers were voted to the team, a first since 2017, as noted by the New York Post‘s Andrew Battifarano. Former Met Marcus Stroman was also named to the NL roster.
Alonso’s posted a .217/.311/.505 (125 wrC+) triple-line slash with 24 home runs, generating 1.5 fWAR in 75 games this season. Earlier this season, he missed time after being hit in the wrist by a Charlie Morton fastball, but returned after only ten days.

Several Mets performed well in the fan-driven initial All-Star voting round, with Francisco Lindor, Alonso, and Francisco Alvarez placing 2nd, 3rd, and 4th respectively, among their respective positional peers. Brandon Nimmo, who is sixth in fWAR among all NL outfielders, didn’t make the team, either.
However, Lindor was the only Met named as a finalist in Round 2, collecting 31% of the votes, well short of Orlando Arcia‘s 69%. Despite generating 2.5 fWAR, 17 home runs, and 55 RBIs so far this season, he will not join Alonso in Seattle.
Starling Marte, Alonso, Edwin Diaz, and Jeff McNeil were selected for last season’s mid-season festivities. Alonso lost out in the semifinals of last season’s Home Run Derby, failing to become the first player to win three consecutive derbies. He said he’d only take part in the derby if he made the team, but it remains to see if he will still participate.
After the announcement, the Mets announced on Twitter that Alonso will once again take place in the home run derby. He won the event twice in 2019 and 2021 before falling short in 2022. He will look to win the third derby in his career All-Star weekend.
Major League Baseball’s All-Star game will take place on Tuesday, July 11th at 8:00 P.M at Seattle’s T-Mobile Park. The MLB Futures game will precede the game; Mets’ Double-A right-hander Mike Vasil has been named to the team.
