Alameda County: Man shot dead by law enforcement following a pursuit

ALAMEDA COUNTY — A man was shot dead by law enforcement Monday morning after he allegedly tried to grab an officer’s gun during a struggle in unincorporated Alameda County, authorities said.

In a news conference, a spokesperson with Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, said it all began when a California Highway Patrol officer spotted a car stolen out of Hayward speeding on eastbound Interstate 580.

The officer was following the car when it exited on 164th Avenue and later crashed. Three suspects, all wearing ski masks, then jumped out of the car, sheriff’s spokesperson Lt. Tya Modeste said.

An Alameda County sheriff’s deputy who arrived saw the CHP officer on their back, fighting two of the suspects, Modeste said. One of the suspects appeared to be attempting to disarm the officer, she said.

Law enforcement from the CHP and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office fired their weapons, killing the man at around 2 a.m., Modeste said. A second suspect was detained and a third who ran was later found using a sheriff’s drone,  Modeste said.

The CHP officer was injured in the scuffle but is expected to be OK.
