RA supports Coastal Rowers after Beach Games cancelled

Rowing Australia (RA) joins with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) in expressing its disappointment at the late cancellation of the 2023 World Beach Games in Bali.

The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) advised on Wednesday that the Local Organising Committee had withdrawn from hosting duties citing financial concerns. With an August 5 start having been scheduled, there is now insufficient time to find a replacement venue.

Rowing Australia had been proud to send four Coastal Rowers – Morgan Hodgson, Elizabeth Newell, Marcus Della Marta and Ellen Pozzi – as part of a 24-strong team that also included 20 beach handballers.

The World Beach Games would have been another platform to feature Coastal Rowing – Beach Sprints as it continues its rapid growth, having already been included on the program for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Victoria and slated for potential inclusion in the Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2028.

Rowing Australia Chief Operating Officer Sarah Cook OLY thanked the athletes for their hard work and dedication and said the sport would support them moving forward as they sought to achieve their competitive goals and represent their country at the highest level.

“This is difficult news for Elizabeth, Ellen, Marcus and Morgan, as well as their coaches, clubs, family and everyone who has helped them on their journey,” Cook said.

“Rowing Australia has been in touch with the athletes and we’re happy to advise that the uniforms, which are being provided by the AOC, will be given to the athletes in recognition of their selection on the team.

“We can’t wait to see them back in action at the Australian Coastal Rowing & Beach Sprints Championships at Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast from July 27-30, which will double as the Oceania Beach Sprint Championships.”

That event will also serve as the selection trials for the World Rowing Coastal Championships, to be held in Italy from October 6-8.
