Two newborn babies found dead in day care center bathroom
Two newborn girls were found dead in a trash bag inside the restroom of day care center.
The babies were found on Thursday, a day after day care workers saw the mother covered in blood in the restroom, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
They were discovered at the Bernice Lavin Early Childhood Education Center which is on the Northwestern Memorial Hospital campus, shortly before 7pm.
The woman, 29, works at the day care and was taking a class there, a police report states. She did not show up at the class on Thursday and was found just before 6pm by workers in the bathroom on the first floor.
She was transported to the adjacent hospital and underwent a surgery, cops said.
Janitorial staff cleaning the restroom found a black trash bag in a cabinet with the newborn girls unresponsive, according to the report.
The babies were rushed to Lurie Children’s Hospital but they could not be revived. Their cause of death was not immediately determined.
‘Area Three detectives are handling the investigation, which was initially classified as endangering the life or health of children,’ said police, according to the Daily Mail.
A Northwestern Medicine spokesperson told FOX 32 that ‘an emergency medical situation involving a daycare employee occurred’ and that the city fire and police departments were called.
‘No daycare children were involved or impacted by the situation,’ stated the spokesperson. ‘We are working with CPD regarding this incident and unable to comment further at this time.’
Detectives worked to recover video footage form the day care.
The mother’s identity and her condition have not been released. The newborn’s identities and exact ages have not been disclosed.
No one was immediately arrested in the case.
The day care center is located on the 400 block of East Ontario Street in the Streeterville neighborhood in the Near North Side.
