North Korea has warned that it may shoot down US warplanes in its airspace
A statement issued by the official representative of the DPRK defence ministry said that Pyongyang could shoot down United States warplanes in case of violation of the country’s airspace. This was reported by the Korean Central Telegraphic Agency.
The Korean Central Telegraphic Agency cites the text of a statement by an official representative of the DPRK defence ministry, which says that Pyongyang has the right to shoot down US reconnaissance aircraft over its sky. The publication notes that the reason for such a move could be a violation of the country’s airspace.
“The US will have to pay dearly for its provocative aerial reconnaissance, which is frantically conducted with intrusion into our airspace without notice. There is no guarantee that shocking events, such as the destruction of a US Air Force strategic reconnaissance aircraft over the East Sea (Sea of Japan – ed.), will not occur,” the CTAC quoted a DPRK defence official as saying.
The DPRK Defence Ministry official notes that US U-2S and RC-135 spy planes in early July and the RQ-4B Global Hawk drone flew in close proximity to the peninsula. It claims that there was a reported violation of North Korean airspace by US aircraft between 2 and 9 July.
“At the moment we are showing maximum patience and restraint, but everything has its limit. All provocative actions by the US must stop immediately,” the government official summarised.
