Over 20 Afghan Refugees Rescued From Human Traffickers in Peru

Peruvian authorities have announced they rescued at least 23 Afghan refugees from human traffickers along the border with Brazil.

A prosecutors’ office in Peru on Sunday, July 9, in a statement said, “These migrants were trying to reach Ecuador, Mexico and eventually reach to the United States.”

These Afghan refugees must have given huge sums of money to smugglers to reach northern borders, the statement said.

According to the Peruvian prosecutor’s office, there were three kids among the refugees who were kept in a cell along the border with Brazil.

Furthermore, it is stated that human traffickers have deceived these Afghan migrants, and had kept them in a cell without giving them food or water.  

Since the return of the Taliban to power in August 2021, Afghan people have unprecedentedly migrated to the neighboring countries and beyond, mostly due to economic reasons, fearing death threats and persecution by the ruling regime.

Meanwhile, a Spanish aid group reported that at least 300 people have disappeared in three separate boats which were traveling from Senegal to the Canary Islands.

Additionally, the Italian coastal guard has reported saving at least 1600 asylum seekers, adding human traffickers and middlemen will face punishment of up to 30 years imprisonment, based on the Italian government regulations.
