A mistrial has been declared in the trial of a Massachusetts man charged with killing a police officer and an innocent bystander after the jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict. Norfolk Superior Court Judge Beverly Cannone announced the mistrial on Monday after two weeks of jury deliberations. Emanuel Lopes pleaded not guilty to 11 charges, including two counts of murder. He is accused of killing of 42-year-old Weymouth police Sgt. Michael Chesna and 77-year-old bystander Vera Adams on July 15, 2018. The defense said Lopes lacked criminal responsibility because of mental illness. Prosecutors said they would retry the case.
