Soap fans can now scoff Coronation Street-themed bread in the Co-op – but some shoppers are just baffled
SOAP fans can scoff Corrie-themed bread — as a supermarket is selling Roy’s Rolls.
The £2 white baps are a nod to Roy Cropper’s Weatherfield cafe of the same name.
They are being sold by the Co-op as part of a tie-in that also sees the store feature on screen.
It said on Facebook: “Who’s spotted these in their local Co-op? Which Corrie fan needs these at their next BBQ?”
But it left some baffled.
One said: “I had to have it explained to me as I don’t watch soaps.
“I’ve also seen customers looking confused when looking for Co-op white rolls as they have no idea who Roy is.”
Another added: “Had them yesterday. Very nice and soft.
“My other half was like, ‘Coronation Street rolls, I’ve seen it all’.”
The Co-op announced its tie-in with the show in 2018.
Costa coffee also came on board.
The changes, part of a new, extended Weatherfield set, came in store fronts, posters, bags and cups being integrated into the show.
In ITV’s biggest product placement deal to date, the agreement allows both brands to use Coronation Street assets and extend the partnership off-air.
Mark Trinder, ITV’s sales director, said: “The expansion of the Coronation Street set has given us a great opportunity to feature branded shop facades as more of Weatherfield is opened up to viewers.
“Incorporating product placement on this scale is something we have wanted to do for some time and we’re delighted with this exciting opportunity.”
