NST Leader: Of quotas and rights
Surprisingly, there wasn’t a deluge of debates following Anwar’s disclosure except for an idea floated on Monday by Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, the president of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), a political party, which went like this: Okay, but. In other words, keep the quota system, but shift it to one that is driven by needs and merit. In Muda’s scheme of things, it is equality in opportunities, not equality in results. Both the current quota system, which favours the Malay and Bumiputera students, and the one suggested by Muda are about helping the less fortunate. Both Anwar and Syed Saddiq appear to agree on the principle of helping the less fortunate, but perhaps disagree on who they are.
