Man narrowly avoids being trampled at Pamplona bull run

This is the disturbing moment a man narrowly missed being gored by a bull in Spain during the San Fermín festival.

Footage shows bulls busting through the streets of the northern city of Pamplona where the fifth day of the annual event is underway.

It attracts tens of thousands of people from across the world who gather at the centre to run in front of the stampeding animals.

One such reveller could be seen falling on the ground, covering his head with his hands, as two bulls trample within inches of him.

He is one of many runners who came close to being stamped on – or even worse- gored, which has been a frequent feature at the festival.

It was made famous by Ernest Hemingway’s 1926 novel ‘The Sun Also Rises’, and this year marks the 100th anniversary of the writer’s first visit to Pamplona.

Every morning, workers launch a rocket to scare the bulls who charge chaotically out of the Corrales de Santo Domingo and onto the narrow city streets lined with tourists.

As the animals are chased toward the Plaza de Toros, they often smash into walls and the runners.

Races are normally quick, lasting only a few minutes, and the rest of the day for the runners features massive sessions of drinking, eating and attending cultural events.

Four runners were gored in the festival last year, and 16 people have died in bull runs since 1910, most recently in 2009.

The animals that run each morning are then killed in the afternoon by bullfighters, known as matadors.

Animal rights activists annually campaign against the San Fermín, claiming it to be cruel to animals.

A petition by PETA Latino to the mayor of Pamplona to end the race has reached more than 25,000 signatures.
