Republicans respond to whistleblower's indictment with more conspiracy theories

Republicans reacted to the arrest of a purported whistleblower on serious federal charges with more conspiracy theories involving President Joe Biden.

Think tank director Gal Luft, who claims to have knowledge of Biden family corruption, was indicted by the Department of Justice for allegedly violating Iran sanctions, trafficking weapons and acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China, and GOP lawmakers and conservative broadcasters immediately accused the president of targeting him, reported the Washington Post.

“I don’t trust the DOJ or the FBI, they are trying to silence our witnesses,” said Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) on Fox News. “This is a way to do that.”

The indictment was handed up Nov. 1 and unsealed Monday, months after he was initially arrested in February and long before he publicly accused the president of corruption, although he claims to have spoke to the FBI about his interactions with the president's son Hunter Biden and brother Joseph Biden.

"The timing is always coincidental, according to the Democrats and the Department of Justice,” Comer told Fox News.

Hunter Biden has agreed to plead guilty to tax fraud charges and enter a diversion program for a firearms charge, but Republicans have still not turned up any proof that the president accepted any foreign bribes or other corrupt behavior -- although Comer and other GOP lawmakers treat that as a matter of fact and accuse the media of covering for Biden.

"When this is the standard of scrutiny your allies apply, it’s little wonder that a fugitive accused of violating sanctions and aiding the Chinese government — but who is also willing to suggest that the Biden administration is out to get him — gets to be hailed as a bold truth teller," wrote Post columnist Philip Bump.
