A HOMESTEADER has shared her hands-off hack for tackling weeds in your garden.
The content creator showed her followers how she protects her garden for free.
In her video, TikTok user Katie (@thehomesteadingrd) explained: “We put in this amazing new garden on our new 240 acre homestead but with the busyness of moving the weeds got out of control.”
The TikToker continued: “Typically I always weed by hand but I knew that there was no way I’d be able to get a handle on this.”
Katie gave viewers a glimpse of her “cardboard walking paths,” which she placed over the areas with weeds.
The cardboard slowly kills the weeds underneath with no additional effort required.
Katie explained: “You can’t use any old cardboard, there are two things that we need to make sure to avoid so you’re not dumping toxins into your garden.
“Avoid using cardboard that’s shiny and has a lot of pigmentation, instead we want boring brown cardboard,” she told viewers.
The gardening enthusiast added: “Secondly, remove any tape, we don’t want plastic in our garden.”
Katie checked on the cardboard she had added the previous week, which was successfully killing her weeds.
She told her followers: “I prefer to keep it to my walking paths only because yes, it’s pretty clean cardboard but it’s not necessarily organic.
“So I like to use organic straw for on top of my plants and keep those to the walking paths,” Katie said.
“If you’re drowning in weeds too definitely give this a try,” the TikToker recommended.
TikTok users took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the hack.
“Hey, I do that, straw for plants and cardboard for the path,” wrote one viewer.
Another follower said: “I usually heavily mulch with hay we bail ourselves but it still fights weeds. I’m gonna try this.”
“I always added 6-8 inches of straight compost between the rows and plants. It burns the weeds and feeds the plants,” commented a third person.
