Road collapses in Newcastle leaving huge hole after hours of rain
A large part road in Newcastle has collapsed after hours of heavy rain.
The gaping hole appeared on Stepney Bank in the city centre and dirty sewage water could be seen flowing beneath.
Rats could also be seen scurrying through the cracks in the soaking tarmac.
The hole was guarded by a handful of cones and an onlooker confirmed police were on their way.
Fortunately, nobody was injured by the collapse.
It comes after the UK is set for a month of wet weather as a heatwave sweeps across Europe.
Rome registered a new record high temperature of 41.8 Celsius on Tuesday, while records also fell in northern Spain, after the Catalonian Weather Service recorded 45C at the Boadella reservoir near the village of Darnius – the hottest temperature ever recorded in the region.
One pedestrian in the north-east said: ‘I don’t know how long it’s been like that but it doesn’t look good.
‘It looks like it gets worse, it looks like Niagara Falls is underneath it because there’s so much water.
‘We’ve had so much rain today in the city that the sewers are overwhelmed.
‘I think it should be better protected to be honest. Someone could end up driving too close to it.’
