The allegations are strikingly similar to claims spread by ex-President Donald Trump and others in the United States ahead of the 2020 election. Spreading on platforms like Twitter, Facebook and TikTok, the claims suggest Spain's government will cheat to ensure the center-right Popular Party does not win. Like the U.S., Spain has a robust system of checks and balances designed to prevent fraud, but that hasn't stopped isolated cases from being presented as proof that democratic elections cannot be trusted.
