How Fran Drescher Is Responding to Concerns That She Could Be ‘Blacklisted’ by Streaming Platforms After SAG-AFTRA Strike
Fran Drescher is more than just The Nanny. The actor and president of SAG-AFTRA, the union representing roughly 160,000 TV and film actors who went on strike last week, had some choice words when asked about potentially being blacklisted by studios and streaming services following her comments calling Disney CEO Bob Iger a “medieval land baron” driven by greed.
“I’m in this unique position right now. And it’s very historic. And I really feel like this is my calling. You know I’ve been talking about the hero’s journey a lot. And when we take the hero’s journey, you know that it comes with great sacrifice,” Drescher told Variety.
“I’m not going to worry about my career. I’ve had a fantastic career. If anybody in this industry wishes to blacklist me or being on the side of right and good, then whatever,” she added.
SAG-AFTRA officially started its strike on July 14. Drescher just became the union’s president, and she previously told Deadline that every moment of her career has lead to this. “I’ve been successful in leadership positions in all different facets of life. At the helm, you need somebody who is a visionary that has been successful in leadership positions over and over again,” she explained after announcing her candidacy for SAG-AFTRA president earlier this month before the strike.
“It’s essential to have someone who is in the mix and on the cutting edge of what is happening now. I am a person who turns hard-lived life experiences into wisdom, and it’s those life lessons I will bring to the table.”
Drescher has a long history of organizing. She was named a State Department Public Diplomacy Envoy back in 2008 and is the founder of Cancer Schmancer, a nonprofit geared towards getting women screened and treated for cancers early. And it doesn’t seem like she is afraid of the Hollywood execs who have been earning an average of $28 million per year since 2021. Go get ’em, Fran.
