The three kitchen essentials you can use to keep pesky flies out of your home for good
IF there’s one thing about summer we can all agree is pretty annoying, it’s pesky flies finding their way into your home.
If you’ve tried different traps, candles and sprays but still wonder how they get inside, don’t worry – there are three kitchen essentials that are up to the job.
Recently, Express.co.uk shared the why the common items work so well, and it turns out pricey traps are unnecessary.
Cucumber
You might think cucumber’s don’t have a particularly strong smell, but flies can’t stand it, so you can use this to your advantage.
Experts from experts at Health Plan Spain explained how to use cucumbers to keep flies away.
They said: “If you find that flies are drawn to your rubbish/food bins, one of the best ways to prevent them from laying their eggs there is to place slices of cucumber on the top of the bin.
“In addition to that, if you find flies are drawn to certain areas around your home, placing cucumber slices around those areas will help keep them at bay.”
Vodka
Flies also hate the smell of vodka, so it can also be used to keep them out of your home during the summer months.
You can mix Vodka with “a teaspoon of organic lemon eucalyptus oil and two teaspoons of aloe vera juice,” to make a nifty solution, the experts said.
Just spray it over surfaces, like bins, where flies are attracted and they should stay away.
Not only that, but the same spray can be used to keep mosquitoes away too.
Apple cinder vinegar
You can make a fly trap using apple cider vinegar, since flies like the smell it works wonders at catching them.
Start by cutting the top off a plastic bottle and pouring in some apple cider vinegar, then carefully lay the bottle down and house flies will be drawn in.
You could also try filling a bowl with apple cider vinegar and just a drop of washing up liquid, the experts said.
“The detergent will allow the liquid in the bowl to have a firmer surface, giving the flies a false sense of security, before they eventually fall into the vinegar.
“When doing this, make sure you place the bowl away from any other temptations on the table or countertops. You don’t want anything else to catch their attention and draw them away from your trap,” they noted.
