Kerry Katona reveals she ‘couldn’t read or write’ until she was 20 and people had to read restaurant menus to her
KERRY Katona has revealed that she ‘couldn’t read or write’ until she was 20 and had to ask people to read restaurant menus to her.
The 42-year-old opened up about her literacy skills as a youngster on Ireland AM.
Kerry said: “I remember when I actually moved over to Ireland with Brian McFadden I was pregnant… I couldn’t read or write.
“I’m dyslexic. I actually, with Brian, on tour all the time, I did a typing course and I taught myself how to read and write properly.
Mum-of-five Kerry continued: “I’ll never forget like being an Atomic Kitten.
“I mean bear in mind I had four sets of foster parents, three refuges, I went to eight different schools which I was rarely in because my mum never let me go to school really.
“So I couldn’t even spell the word orange at some point.
“I just remember thinking we were in a restaurant with Atomic Kitten and I couldn’t even read the menu.
“So my manager used to have to read it for me.
“Then I remember I was so dim when it came to restaurants. My local restaurant was like a chippy, a fish and chip shop.
“I was in this Mexican restaurant, I’ll never forget Liz ordered fajitas and I was like ‘oh my gosh she’s going to eat a dead baby!’
“Fajitas – fetus. That’s how uneducated I was with food.”
Kerry shares her daughters Molly and Lily-Sue with her first husband Brian.
Heidi Elizabeth, Maxwell Mark and Dylan George are from previous relationships.
Earlier this week Kerry revealed a cancer scare after finding ‘lump’ under her armpit.
The star also addressed Danielle Lloyd‘s recent cancer scare following the former model’s shock news last week.
Former Atomic Kitten star Kerry said: “I really felt for Danielle Lloyd last week when she shared details of her cancer scare. I hope she’s OK. It’s such a scary thing.
“I once found a lump underneath my armpit in the shower and it was around a similar time that Sarah Harding was diagnosed, which put the fear of God in me.”
Writing in her column for new! magazine, Kerry continued: “My life flashed before my eyes and that’s when my health anxiety really kicked in.
“I had the realisation that we’re not all immortal and that your health is not always something you can control.”
