Dodgers get Ryan Yarbrough from Royals at trade deadline
LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers made another trade to bolster their pitching staff just before Tuesday’s MLB trade deadline, acquiring left-hander Ryan Yarbrough from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for minor league first baseman Devin Mann and 19-year-old shortstop Derlin Figueroa.
Yarbrough missed 55 games after being struck in the face by a line drive earlier this season, but he’s been solid since returning. The 31-year-old had a 2.19 ERA in four starts in July, allowing six runs in 24⅔ innings with 15 strikeouts and just two walks. He has a 4.24 ERA this year but a 3.08 ERA as a starter.
The Royals signed Yarbrough to a one-year, $3 million deal this past offseason after he was non-tendered by the Tampa Bay Rays, and he still has one more year of arbitration eligibility before becoming a free agent.
Yarbrough is a low-velocity, ground ball pitcher with a fastball averaging just 87 mph and a curveball that averages 71 mph. Over his career, left-handed batters are hitting .223 with a .655 OPS and 151 strikeouts against him.
Mann, 26, appeared in 89 games for the Oklahoma City Dodgers, hitting .307 with 14 home runs and 71 RBIs. He has been in the Dodgers’ minor league system for six seasons, hitting a combined .270 with 65 homers and 288 RBIs in 485 games. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2018 out of Louisville.
Figueroa, 19, appeared in 31 games for the Arizona League Dodgers, hitting .237 with three homers and 21 RBIs. In three minor league seasons with the Dodgers, he has hit a combined .233 with 12 homers and 73 RBIs. He was signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic on Feb. 1, 2021.
The Dodgers acquired right-handed starter Lance Lynn and right-handed reliever Joe Kelly from the Chicago White Sox last week.
