WSJ: Russia’s ability to withstand Western sanctions will be a subject for analysts to study
Russia’s ability to withstand sanctions imposed by Western countries will be a subject for analysts to study in the future, writes the US newspaper Wall Street Journal.
“How Russia managed to avoid collapse and achieve some growth during the year despite an economic blockade by the West will become a future case study for analysts pondering when sanctions make sense as a policy tool,” the publication writes.
Nicholas Mulder, a professor of history at Cornell University who specialises in sanctions and is cited by the publication, said the West’s attempt to impose sanctions on a country as large as Russia could be an instructive example in the long run.
“Russia’s huge size makes it impossible to cut it off from the global economy. It remains the main source of raw materials for developed economies, and for developing countries – the most important supplier of food and fertilisers,” the newspaper writes with reference to Mulder.
The expert believes that Moscow’s “quick turn” towards Asia as a trade partner may be favourable for Russia.
The Russian Federation has repeatedly stated that the country will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West began to exert on Russia several years ago and continues to intensify. Moscow noted that the West lacks the courage to recognise the failure of sanctions against Russia. Western countries themselves have repeatedly voiced the opinion that anti-Russian sanctions are ineffective. Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier said that the policy of containing and weakening Russia is a long-term strategy of the West, while the sanctions have dealt a serious blow to the entire global economy. According to him, the West’s main goal is to worsen the lives of millions of people.
