Noah Song returned to Red Sox, Griff McGarry promoted to Triple A
After an eight-month stint in the Phillies organization, Noah Song is heading back to the Red Sox.
Song, the Phillies’ 2022 Rule 5 draft pick, was placed on waivers after the Phillies could not find a trade partner prior to the 6 p.m. ET trade deadline on Tuesday. Song cleared waivers and was offered back to the Red Sox for $50,000, the Phillies officially announced Friday.
The U.S. Naval academy graduate missed around three months of the season with a low back strain. He began a minor league rehab assignment in late June, where he pitched at three different Phillies minor league affiliates within a month. As expected, Song was inconsistent and just needed more time as he built back up following a four-year stint away from baseball. Song was designated for assignment when his rehab stint concluded.
As Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic pointed out, Song is still Rule 5 eligible and the Red Sox could place him on the 40-man roster prior to this year’s Rule 5 draft to avoid risking losing him again this December.
In other minor league news, the Phillies are promoting one of their top pitching prospects, Griff McGarry to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, according to MiLB Central.
McGarry, 24, has a 2.57 ERA with the Double-A Reading Fightin Phils since June 10. He pitched at Lehigh Valley last year as the Phillies contemplated using him as a relief pitcher down the stretch.
With the acquisition of Michael Lorenzen as well as Cristopher Sánchez’s breakout in the majors, the Phillies rotation seems set, but injuries could change that. It would certainly help if McGarry could solidify himself as a reliable rotation option if the Phillies lose two or more starters to injury during the stretch.
