Feeding the birds in my garden boosted my mental health but I’m struggling to eat myself
DEAR DEIDRE: I USED to really enjoy feeding the birds in my back garden and would spend hours watching them.
Over the years I’ve learned a lot about our native species.
But this cost-of-living crisis has meant I’m struggling to feed myself, let alone the birds, and I can no longer afford to put seeds and nuts out for them.
I am a 45-year-old single man.
I’m unemployed, on benefits and feel that life is such a struggle.
The birds used to bring me so much joy, but now I feel nothing but guilt.

It makes me sad when I open my curtains in the morning and see them sitting on the tree waiting for me.
I know it sounds ridiculous but I’m much lower since losing this small joy.

DEIDRE SAYS: Feeding wild birds is an enjoyable pastime but it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Birds will eat inexpensive kitchen scraps such as cooked rice or pasta, uncooked oats, vegetables such as peas and sweetcorn and bread only occasionally.
They will also eat bruised or soft fruit cut into slices.
Birds will come to your garden for water, even if there is no food.
You obviously have a real affinity with birds and the RSPB is always looking for volunteers.
