Dwyane Wade Tackles Florida Senate Campaign Rumors
Dwyane Wade is beloved across The Sunshine State for helping lead the Miami Heat to back-to-back championship titles a decade ago. Since playing his final season, Wade has spoken out in defense of his daughter Zaya and even moved his family out of the state in the face of trans healthcare bans and a hostile environment for minorities.
Wade’s insistence on standing up for what’s right reportedly caught the eye of Florida Democrat donor groups looking to put up a formidable challenger to Republican Sen. Rick Scott in 2024. In a new interview with The New York Times, the newly inducted NBA Hall of Famer revealed that the rumors were true and that he had been approached to run for office.
“I mean, it’s just conversation,” Wade admitted. "'Hey, you would be good for,' 'Hey, we can see you in,' 'We would love to have you in.'"
“It’s things that I’m passionate about that I will speak out on and speak up for. And so I don’t play the politician games. I don’t know a lot about it,” he continued. “But I also understand that I have a role as an American citizen and as a known person to be able to highlight and speak on things that other people may not be able to because they don’t have the opportunity to do this.” When asked if that meant he was running, he laughed it off.
“I have so many things that I’m focused on and there’s so many, so many battles to fight, in a sense… And so I’m trying to help where the need is and where I can,” he added.
Senator Dwyane Wade does have a nice ring to it, and he wouldn’t be the first Hall of Famer to cross over into the world of politics. Knicks legend Bill Bradley served as a Senator for New Jersey from 1979 to 1997.
