More than 600 firefighters, including reinforcements from several European countries, backed by a fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters are battling three persistent major wildfires in Greece, two of which have been raging for days. A massive blaze in the country’s northeastern regions of Evros and Alexandroupolis, believed to have caused the deaths of 20 people, is burning for a ninth day. Another major wildfire was burning for days on the slopes of Mount Parnitha, on the northwestern fringes of the Greek capital, while a third started on Saturday on the Cycladic island of Andros and was still burning out of control Sunday.
