James Maddison sends message of support to out-of-form Richarlison

James Maddison has praised Richarlison for delivering another tireless performance against Bournemouth, reassuring the striker that things will start clicking for him in front of goal.

There have been a whole host of positives for Tottenham in their first three matches of the Ange Posteocglou era, with the midfielder three already seeming to have superb understanding.

The back four also looks quite accomplished with both Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie hardly putting a foot wrong so far.

However, the one area of concern is the fact that Richarlison is yet to get off the mark in front of the goal, with the striker missing some gilt-edged chances.

The burden of filling Harry Kane’s shoes was always going to be a considerable one and the 26-year-old looked an extremely frustrated figure at the Vitality Stadium, with the pressure evidently starting to tell on him.

Richarlison took to social media to post ‘we march on’ following Tottenham’s 2-0 win against the Cherries, and Maddison offered his support to the striker, assuring him that it is only a matter of time before he starts finding the back of the net.

The attacking midfielder’s comment on the Brazilian’s post reads: “Brilliant today brother! Worked your bollocks off. Goals will come very soon.”

Richarlison is nowhere near as bad a player as he looked in that 15-minute spell in the second half just before he came off. It is clear that the striker is now feeling the pressure and it will only continue to build the longer he goes without scoring a goal.

While some Spurs fans are of the belief the Brazilian is not good enough and that we need to sign an upgrade, I remain convinced that he has all the attributes to thrive as a number nine in Postecoglou’s system.

The 26-year-old has a tremendous engine and never stops pressing, is decent at holding up the ball, is mobile enough to make runs in behind, and is capable of some neat combination play.

Richarlison also evidently knows where the back of the net is, having consistently hit double digits for a poor Everton side and also boasting of quite an impressive goal-scoring record for the Selecao. I believe that things will start clicking for the striker once he opens his account for the season.
