Rare video tape of classic 80s film Back to the Future sells for eye-watering sum
A RARE video tape of classic ’80s film Back to the Future has sold for a whopping £8,000.
The 1986 VHS cassette — still in its original wrapping — sparked a bidding war.
As a result, the mint condition home movie fetched double its £4,000 estimate in the online US auction.
In recent years, pristine VHS video tapes of classic films have become highly sought-after among nostalgic fans who grew up with them in the 1980s and now have disposable income.
Both VHS and Betamax video tapes became popular in the 1980s.
They dominated the market until the advent of DVDs in 1995.
But by the late 2000s, the VHS format had become almost completely redundant.
The Back to the Future tape went under the hammer at Heritage Auctions, of Dallas, Texas.
Last year, the firm sold a copy which previously belonged to Tom Wilson — who played bully Biff in the film — for £60,000.
Spokesman Jay Carlson said: “Back to the Future is one of those tapes that connects deeply with VHS collectors and film fans and we have seen a steady demand for it over multiple auctions since last year.
“Back to the Future is one of those titles that connects with people, especially those who grew up in that era, and is a title that every collector wants to have among their collections.”
The film, starring Michael J Fox as a time-travelling teen, was the highest grossing of 1985.
