Report: Spurs ‘continue to insist’ on signing 28-year-old before transfer deadline

According to the print edition of AS (24/08/23 – as relayed by Sport Witness), Tottenham Hotspur have not yet abandoned their pursuit of Clement Lenglet, with a late return to the North London club still on the cards for the Frenchman.

Earlier this week, we relayed a report from Sport, which suggested that Barcelona had ‘thrown in the towel’ in their attempts to sell Lenglet permanently.

It was explained the Catalan club are instead now looking to loan out the player and are optimistic they will be able to do so, with other clubs apart from Spurs also on the table.

The report added that Barca are keen to ensure that whatever suitor will cover a ‘very important percentage’ of the defender’s wages this season

Tottenham still in the picture to sign Clement Lenglet

AS have now stated that the door is still open for the Frenchman to return to N17, with Spurs ‘continuing to insist’ on the centre-back’s signing.

The report reveals that while Tottenham have shown no intention to meet Barca’s €15m (£12.8m) asking price, no other club has come close to that figure either.

It is asserted that the Lilywhites remain the club who ‘most want’ Lenglet’s services and that a loan move now looks ‘the most solid option’, adding that the former Sevilla man’s exit could be delayed ‘until the last day’ of the window.

This transfer saga has played out exactly how it always looked like it was going to. 

Tottenham were evidently sure that Barca would agree to a cut-price sale or a loan late in the window, given their desperation to get the centre-back’s salary off their wage bill.

If Spurs do manage to offload Eric Dier before the window shuts, I would not be surprised if they strike a late deal to re-sign Lenglet.
