British rugby player found dead on rocks in France
A British armed forces rugby player has been found dead on a rocky stretch of coastline in France.
The man, who has not yet been named, was discovered in the popular seaside resort of Dinard, northern Brittany, on Tuesday shortly after he had been reported missing.
His tragic death comes while the UK is taking part in the World Defence Rugby competition in the French region.
Investigators believe the man may have died after a suspected accidental fall, according to local prosecutor Fabrice Tremel.
Two of the team coaches have reportedly identified his body.
Metro.co.uk understands the man was serving in the Royal Navy.
Mr Tremel told news outlet Ouest France: ‘In parallel with the discovery of the body, a report was made to the Saint-Malo police station by the English rugby military team in connection with the disappearance of one of their players.
‘The body has been identified by his two coaches.’
An autopsy will be carried out on Wednesday to further determine exactly how the player died.
Local police say they found the player on the rocks of Port Nican near the tip of Avenue de la Vicomte.
The British team is currently based in Dinard and the squad has been training in the nearby port city of Saint-Malo.
They are due to face Fiji in the semi-final on Sunday at the Commandant Bougouin Stadium in Rennes after a team record-breaking 128-3 victory over Spain.
The Ministry of Defence has been approached for comment.
Earlier this year, a British soldier drowned after falling into a river in Estonia while walking home from a night out with friends.
