A man has died after his car smashed through some barriers and ‘drove into the water‘ at a marina.

Emergency services were called to the National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, Wales, just before 10am this morning.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service initially said the casualty was rescued from the ‘submerged vehicle’ and ‘put in the care of the Hazardous Area Response Team’.

But police have now revealed the man has died.

A photo of the dock area showed metal railings had been seemingly broken where the car is thought to have gone into the water.

Detective Inspector Chris Evans said: ‘Emergency services attended, and a car was found fully submerged in the water.

‘The body of a man was located in the car.

‘The death is being treated as unexplained at this time and enquiries are continuing to ascertain the full circumstances behind the incident.

‘The incident is ongoing whilst the car is being recovered.’

A spokesperson for the Wales Ambulance Service said: ‘We sent four hazardous area response teams, one air ambulance, two Cymru high acuity response units, one duty operational manager and one emergency ambulance to the scene where we were assisted by colleagues from the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service who travelled by air.’

A Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service statement read: ‘One private motor vehicle had driven through a barrier and had entered the water with one person inside the vehicle.

‘Crew members, with the assistance of a commercial diver, rescued the casualty from the submerged vehicle who was then put in the care of the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

‘Crews utilised one rescue sled and one underwater camera during the incident.

‘As well as the HART, the Ambulance Service and South Wales Police were also in attendance. Crews left the scene at 11.26am.’

Police are waiting to identify the man but it is believed he is the registered owner of the car and no other people were involved.

An inquest is due to be held.
