Crowd at Hollywood skateboard event becomes unruly, sets off fireworks and lights fires
HOLLYWOOD — A crowd watching a skateboard event in Hollywood became unruly Saturday night, setting off fireworks, torching trash cans and a car and taking selfies.
The unrest began about 7:20 p.m. at Hollywood Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Drake Madison.
Video from the scene showed trash cans on fire and thick smoke from those fires and fireworks while some in the crowd took selfies.
Broadcast reports showed a car was also set on fire during the unrest. Skateboarders were riding on ramps set up on either side of the flaming car, Fox 11 reported.
Officers at the scene called for backup and worked to break up the crowd as firefighters put out the flames, Madison said.
There was no immediate word about injuries, he said. Fox 11 reported three people were taken into custody on suspicion of vandalism.
