I’m an MOT mechanic – drivers always make the same mistake before a check and it makes them fail
AN MOT mechanic has revealed the key mistake that drivers make that leads to a test failure.
Craig from Walsall Wood Tyre & Service, based in Walsall, West Midlands, took to TikTok to explain the costly error.
He told viewers that having a dash cam on during the test can actually land you in hot water as they are against DVSA regulations.
While not specifically banned in the inspection manual, “recording equipment” is prohibited by the user guidelines issued to testing sites.
The guide states that using any recording devices during an MOT is “unacceptable”, meaning it would invalidate the test.
Any dash cam must be disconnected or, if that is not possible, switched off during the test to ensure a pass.
They can also cause a failure if they are installed in a position that blocks your view, though most reputable retailers won’t make that mistake.
Craig said: “It’s there in the user guide.
“You are not allowed to use CCTV or recording equipment on a live MOT.
“It is very very common that good garages will ask you to deactivate dash cams both for an MOT and for service work.”
The guidelines don’t state if there is any other penalty attached to using a recording device during an MOT, but it is likely to void the test result.
With tests costing around £50 a go, it could end up being a costly mistake.
