Mosvold, Sweeney Take Home Doubles Crown on Second Day of Fall Season
WICHITA, Kan. – The Arkansas men’s tennis fall season continued on Saturday as the Razorbacks picked up six more wins between the two tournaments in Wichita and Midland. Jakob Mosvold and Jake Sweeney captured the doubles championship at the Wichita State 5K Fall UTR while Stefanos Savva and Melvin Manuel picked up two wins each.
The second-ranked pairing of Mosvold and Sweeney finished their run in Wichita as they secured a couple of victories on the day, eventually winning in the finals of the doubles draw, defeating No. 4 seeded Marcelo Supelveda and Alejandro Jacome of Wichita State. The tandem was impressive the last two days, only losing 11 games total over a four-match span.
Stefanos Savva had a strong day competing in the singles back draw at the Wichita State 5K Fall UTR, clinching his spot in the Finals. Savva started the day with a 6-2, 6-4, win followed by a 6-2, 6-3, victory in the Semifinals. Savva will match up against Wichita State’s Kristof Minarik as the top two seeds in the tournament face off tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT.
In the singles main draw, Sweeney and Connor Smillie both dropped their Quarterfinal matches after two wins each yesterday.
Melvin Manuel cruised to the finals after two convincing victories in the singles silver draw of the Racquet Club 14K. After winning the first set in his Quarterfinal match in a tiebreak, Manuel only lost one game the rest of the day. He opened with a 7-6 (2), 6-0, victory and then proceeded to take down George Stoupe of LSU 6-0, 6-1. Manuel is slated to play tomorrow against Julien Penzlin (LSU).
Benedikt Emesz dropped a close match to Penzlin earlier in the day in the Quarterfinals 7-5, 4-6, 0-1 (9).
Jared Horwood and Alan Sau Franco both fell in their Semifinal matches in the singles bronze draw after advancing due to their opponents withdrawing in the Quarterfinals.
In doubles play, Horwood/Sau Franco dropped a close match to Oklahoma’s Han/Schlageter in the Quarterfinals 7-9, after winning a tight match yesterday in the Round of 16.
