AN incredible Toyota in immaculate condition which featured in a blockbuster film has sold for an eye-watering price.
The 2000GT coupe was the Japanese marque’s answer to the British-made Jaguar E-Type in the 1960s and even became a Bond car for the 1967 film You Only Live Twice.
Just 351 of the motors were made, making it exceptionally rare and highly sought after.
This 1967 model was bought new by the head of Toyota Mozambique – and has now sold for just under £800,000.
It had a top speed of around 130mph, making it one of the fastest two-litre production cars of its day.
The 2000GT generated a considerable amount of favourable publicity for Toyota, but it was more expensive than the Jaguar E-Type and the Porsche 911, which limited production.
This example was exported to Portugal in 1975, where it remained for over 30 years.
It was transported to the UK in 2012 and has now been sold by auctioneers Bonhams for £799,000 including buyer’s premium.
The motor outsold a 1973 Porsche 911, a 1930 Bentley and a 1929 Bugatti.
Tim Schofield, head of motoring at Bonhams, said: “We have come to expect strong demand for Aston Martins, Bentleys, Bugattis and Porsches.
“While not a surprise to those in the know, to have all those star performers joined by a Toyota was, perhaps, something of an eye-opener.
“However, the 2000GT is a true Japanese jewel – an exceptional car which is on the radar of many top collectors and enthusiasts.
“Hence the huge global interest and the top-end price we achieved for this fabulous example.”
A motor used by the Queen in one of her last public engagements is also on the market for an eye-watering price.
