WIth colder weather just around the corner, many people will be thinking about getting their lawn mower out for one last trim of the grass.
But a gardening expert has revealed timing is imperative, and you better do it sooner rather than later.
Samantha Richards, garden gazebo expert at Gazeboshop, has shared that cutting your grass too short before the temperature dips could spell disaster.
When going into colder weather the grass should be at least two inches long to protect the soil.
She explained to the Express: “The key to protecting your grass as temperatures plummet is recognising when to stop mowing your lawn.
“As a general rule of thumb, you should avoid using your lawnmower when the temperature consistently drops below 10C.”
Generally, the temperature drops in late October or November, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the weather forecast.
The garden whizz added: “When the temperature dips below this point, the grass will enter its dormant stage and stop growing.
“It’s worth noting the ideal grass height going into winter is around two inches; long enough so that the grass still provides shade to the soil and protection to the roots, but also short enough to avoid attracting mould or fungus and becoming a shelter for insects and pests.”
She recommends taking your lawn down bit by bit during the build-up to winter, reducing the blade height each time until you reach two inches.
“Although it is not advised, for those adamant on mowing their lawn throughout the colder months make sure you raise the cut to the highest setting to protect your grass as best as possible,” the expert added.
