Met Office reveals when remnants of Hurricane Lee will hit UK

Heavy rain and gale-force winds are expected to hit the west and spread from Tuesday (Picture: PA)

More torrential rain is expected this week when the aftermath of Hurricane Lee hits the UK.

The extreme weather event, which became a hurricane over the Caribbean earlier this month and is now a post-tropical cyclone, is currently battering Canada.

One person died in the US border state of Maine after a tree fell on his vehicle, while thousands have been left without electricity after 70mph gales knocked down power lines.

Now ‘Storm Lee’, it will weaken as it swings across the Atlantic, carried by a ‘jet stream’ of fast-flowing air, according to the Met Office.

It is set to move across the UK between Tuesday and Thursday, carrying ‘heavy showers’ and a ‘risk of further thunderstorms’, said meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey.

A yellow weather warning has been issued for rain across ‘much of Wales and North West England’ from Tuesday morning to Wednesday evening.

The ‘heaviest and most persistent’ rain will fall in Wales and northwest England, with showers spreading outwards from Tuesday, according to Met forecasts.

Up to 10cm of rain could fall within 36 hours in some areas, raising the prospect of mild flooding on top of last weekend’s deluge.

Monday is also expected to see ‘thundery showers’ as rain in the west ‘quickly pushes east’ throughout the day, the Met Office says.

The weather will become ‘increasingly windy’ in the afternoon and western coastal areas could be hit by gales.

Sunday saw heavy downpours across much of southern England, with almost a month’s worth of rain falling in some areas.

Flash flooding in Devon caused Exeter Airport to close and cancel the rest of Sunday’s flights.

It also led to closure of many bus and train lines as well as attractions such as Paignton Zoo.
