Elderly man and woman, both 72, ‘raped and sexually assaulted’ inside home
A man was charged with two rapes and attempted sexual assault after two elderly people came forward.
A woman, aged 72, reported to the police on March 18 this year that she had been raped the night before at a home in Manchester.
Officers attended the scene to support her and carry out an investigation.
A man, aged 64, was arrested that day and later released pending further enquiries.
Then just over two months later, while police were carrying out further enquiries on May 20, a man aged 72 disclosed he had been sexually assaulted by a man at the same address.
A 64-year-old man was arrested and taken into custody for further questioning on Monday.
Vijay Chawla, of Daisy Bank Road in Manchester, has now been charged with two counts of rape and one count of attempt sexual assault.
He will appear at Manchester Crown Court on November 7 to face his charges.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: ‘On Saturday, March 18 2023, at around 2.30pm officers received a disclosure from a 72-year-old woman who reported she’d been raped the night before at a residency in Manchester.
‘Officers attended the scene, and the female victim was immediately supported by specialist officers and support services.
‘A 64-year-old male was arrested on Saturday, March 18 2023 and was later released pending further investigation.
‘On Saturday, May 20 2023, while officers were conducting further enquiries a 72-year-old man at the residency also bravely disclosed that he had been sexually assaulted by a man at the same address.
‘On Monday, October 2 2023, a 64-year-old male was arrested on suspicion of rape and attempted sexual assault and was taken into custody for further questioning.
‘Vijay Chawla (10/03/1953) of Daisy Bank Road, Manchester has now been charged with two counts of rape and one count of attempt sexual assault.
‘He will next attend Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday, November 7 2023.’
