Actress Suzanne Somers dies at 76
Suzanne Somers, a legendary actress known for her portrayals in classic television sitcoms, has died at the age of 76.
Somers' longtime publicist R. Couri Hay confirmed to People Magazine Sunday the actress’s death, saying that Somers died after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Somers was first diagnosed with the disease in 2000.
Somers would’ve celebrated her 77th birthday on Monday.
“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for over 23 years,” Hay said in a statement.
“Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family,” Hay added. “Her family was gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead, they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”
Hay also told the media outlet that a private family burial will take place this week, noting that a memorial service for the actress will be held next month.
Somers, who began her acting career in the 1960s, became a mainstay in American households throughout the late 1970s and 1990s. Somers starred alongside late actor John Ritter and Joyce DeWitt in the iconic sitcom “Three’s Company,” portraying Christmas “Chrissy” Snow for five seasons.
Somers, who also gained fame for her appearances in infomercials for ThighMaster exercise equipment, also starred in 1990s ABC sitcom “Step By Step” for eight seasons.
This comes as Somers announced earlier this year that her cancer had returned.
“Since I have been taking time off from work, many of you have asked for more details about my health. As you know, I had breast cancer two decades ago, and every now and then it pops up again, and I continue to bat it down,” Somers wrote in an Instagram post in July. “I have used the best alternative and conventional treatments to combat it. This is not new territory for me. I know how to put on my battle gear and I’m a fighter.”
The actress also thanked her husband, Alan Hamel, and her family for their support throughout her battle.
“Alan has been by my side every step of the way. I can’t even explain how much he has done for me. If it’s even possible, we are even closer than ever,” the actress added.
“My incredible family has been so supportive, and have helped so much by keeping the business running so you can still have access to all the wonderful products. Thank you for the continued love and support. It’s only about who you love and who loves you - and I love you!”
