A really top quality Championship defensive midfielder, blocks space extremely well, reads the game superbly, offers a back 4 excellent support and has the ability to spread the play with the ball at his feet. Alongside either a Sunjic type presser, or a Bacuna type passer he’s been outstanding this season

Seeing him playing as a single number 6, having to cover so much space from side to side, and being asked to receive and use the ball in tight spaces is painful to watch. He’s so unsuited to the role he’s being asked to do, and you can say the same about so many of our players.

As we are (apparently) unable to spend until the summer, is Rooney going to jam these square pegs into round holes, or will there have to be a bit of pragmatism until he gets the players he needs
