METALLURGY

METALLURGY is a minimalist exhibition featuring works by Lewis Kemmenoe, his first solo show, which is now extended on display until October 29th at Max Radford Gallery. Kemmenoe takes inspiration from familiar domestic shapes, using them as a canvas for his innovative experiments. Each piece showcases Kemmenoe’s deep dive into its material essence, offering a fresh perspective on the tactile nature of our surroundings. While the foundation of each object remains rooted in its primary function, Kemmenoe elevates them with a touch that brings out their poetic and personal essence. This transformation is less about strict logic and more about creating a visually engaging dialogue. Kemmenoe’s meticulous craftsmanship acts as a structure upon which serendipitous moments find their place.

Organic forms seamlessly blend with industrial aesthetics, creating a balanced visual narrative. Before “METALLURGY,” Kemmenoe’s artistry primarily centered on improvising with similar materials to craft pieces with an organic aura. This exhibition, however, signifies a shift. It celebrates the harmonious integration of varying textures and materials. For instance, the fluidity of aluminum mirrors the undulating patterns of wood grain in a bench. In another piece, fragments of light-colored wood appear to float within metal frames, emphasizing the fusion of diverse elements. At the heart of Kemmenoe’s creations lies the concept of ‘skin.’ It’s about the tactile experience—the sensation one feels upon contact with these pieces. But it’s also about the visual appeal—the intricate, detailed, and sometimes raw finishes of the objects.
