A GREEN-THUMBED professional shared the fall job that will elevate your spring flowerbeds.
The gardening enthusiast demonstrated the essential task for her followers.
In her video, TikTok user Charlie (@gardenonaroll) explained: “[At] springtime, you’ve got new growth coming but there’s not the sort of floral interest that you want from your garden.”
The expert revealed the best way to incorporate color into your flowerbeds.
She told viewers: “Bulbs are a great way of doing that, whether you’re looking at tulips, alliums, daffodils, the choice is endless.
“Bulbs come in all shapes and sizes and can be crazy-looking things.”
Charlie revealed the depth she recommends planting bulbs for the best results.
“As a general rule of thumb, you’re looking at planting a bulb twice its depth below ground,” she said.
Charlie talked her audience through the different ways to lay out their flowerbeds.
“One way of doing it is just to literally throw the bulbs down and where they land, a little spacing gives you kind of a quite natural organic [look],” she said.
Charlie continued: “[It looks] as though they self-seeded and they’ve just sort of sprung up within the garden.”
She explained: “Some people prefer a slightly more regimented [layout], zigzagging through the garden so you’ve got even color going throughout your beds, it’s completely up to you.”
Waking along her own flowerbeds, she scattered her bulbs at random.
“So I am going to throw down some bulbs here and then I’m digging that hole twice the depth of the bulb,” Charlie said.
She recommended placing the root base at the bottom for optimal growth.
Holding her bulbs closer to the camera, she explained: “Even if you can’t see the roots that’s where the roots will be, at the flat base.”
She highlighted the importance of pressing the bulb into the soil gently to avoid damaging it.
“It’s a great surprise come springtime when you see them popping up throughout your plants,” Charlie concluded.
