The UAW-Ford deal is a big win, but autoworkers still need to boost membership
Labor experts warn that despite the wins of the deal, it doesn’t mean a revolution, and unions need to focus on increasing membership.
United Auto Workers reached a tentative deal with Ford on Wednesday, which union president Shawn Fain described as a “historic agreement.” But though the deal includes big wins—including a 25% general wage increase, along with cost-of-living raises that bump that increase to more than 30%—labor experts caution that it doesn’t signify a labor revolution, and there’s still more work to be done when it comes to organizing in general.
