Oakland homicide suspect gets 90 days in jail for violating parole by possessing guns during police chase after fatal shooting

OAKLAND — A 30-year-old Bay Area man has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for violating his parole by possessing pistols that were found in his Lexus during a homicide investigation, court records show.

Donald Everett Parks Jr., of Oakland, was sentenced Oct. 20 by Judge Thomas Stevens, after admitting he had violated his parole. After factoring in credit for time served and good behavior credits, Parks could be released within the next 20 days, court records show.

Parks had been out of prison barely a month when was arrested shortly after midnight on Oct. 2, in connection with the killing of 26-year-old Anthony Sneede. Sneede was fatally shot on the 7800 block of Arthur Street in Oakland, police said.

Within hours of the shooting, police identified Parks’ Lexus SUV as a “suspect vehicle” in Sneede’s killing and pursued it from Oakland to Pleasant Hill, where it crashed into “multiple police vehicles,” according to Parks’ parole violation petition. Inside the car, authorities say they found two pistols, at least one of which fired bullets of the same caliber as shells found at the shooting scene.

After the Lexus crashed, police arrested Parks and a 29-year-old woman, after they were released from the hospital. The woman has been released from jail without charges. Police haven’t said who was driving the Lexus.

Parks has not been charged in connection with Sneede’s death, which remains under investigation, nor has he faced charges of gun possession or involvement in a police chase. During an interview with homicide investigators, he both denied involvement in Sneede’s killing and claimed the guns had been left in the Lexus by its previous owner, who sold him the vehicle just one day earlier, authorities said.

Parks had paroled from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation on Aug. 23, after serving 10 years of a 13-year prison sentence for a conviction of assault with a firearm. That stemmed from a shootout at a First Friday event in Uptown Oakland in February 2013, where an unidentified gunman shot and killed 18-year-old Kiante Ty Campbell, who was a friend of Parks, police said at the time.

Parks told police that the shooting started after Campbell bumped into another man and threats were exchanged. Parks said Campbell pointed a .22-caliber gun into the man’s face and tried to shoot, but the gun jammed, according to testimony at Parks’ preliminary hearing.

The other man then fatally shot Campbell, prompting Parks to fire seven shots into the crowd gathered in a parking lot on Telegraph Avenue between 20th and 21st streets. The man who fired the fatal shot has never been arrested.
