Man ‘heavily armed’ with guns and explosives found dead at amusement park
A man ‘heavily armed’ with bombs and firearms was found dead inside a Colorado amusement park on Saturday.
Investigators are searching for answers after the disturbing discovery over the weekend, which prompted the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park to close for a bomb squad.
‘Given the amount of weaponry, ammunition, and explosive devices found, the suspect could have implemented an attack of devastating proportions upon our community and first responders,’ the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday.
The suspect was found dead in the adventure park located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado on Saturday morning. He was only identified as a 22-year-old male from Carbondale.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the body was ‘discovered prior to the opening of the park and not related to any of the rides at the park.’
The park was closed over the weekend as officers investigated the strange death. On Monday, they revealed some disturbing new details about the incident.
According to investigators, the man ‘illegally entered the park after hours, when no employees or patrons were present.’
‘He was dressed in black-colored tactical clothing, bearing patches and emblems that gave the appearance of being associated with law enforcement,’ the Sheriff’s Office said. This included body armor and a ballistic helmet.
The Sheriff’s Office said he was ‘heavily armed’ with a semi-automatic rifle, a handgun, and additional loaded magazines for both weapons.
Investigators also found ‘multiple’ improvised explosive devices on the suspect’s person and inside his vehicle. The devices were disposed of by the Grand Junction Bomb Squad.
The bomb squad also swept the entire Adventure Park to make sure the suspect did not plant any other IEDs around the property.
Investigators determined there was no longer any threat to the public on Monday afternoon, after a ‘slow, methodical’ search of the amusement park and the suspect’s home.
